A Timeline of Events

1967: The Six-Day War

In 1967, after Israel seized all the territories other than the Emirate of Transjordan of the former Mandatory Palestine, a war broke out between Israel and the surrounding Arab states. The war lasted for six days and ended with Israel occupying the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights.

1973: The Yom Kippur War

In 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. The war ended with Israel regaining control of the territories it had occupied in 1967, but at the cost of heavy casualties.

1978: The Camp David Accords

In 1978, Egypt and Israel signed the Camp David Accords, which called for a peace treaty between the two countries. The treaty was brokered by US President Jimmy Carter and led to the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Sinai Peninsula.

1993: The Oslo Accords

In 1993, Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) signed the Oslo Accords, which established a framework for Palestinian self-governance in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The accords also called for the release of Palestinian prisoners and the establishment of a Palestinian police force.

2000: The Second Intifada

In 2000, the Second Intifada, or uprising, began. The uprising was sparked by a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The uprising lasted for several years and resulted in the deaths of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians.

2005: The Israeli Disengagement

In 2005, Israel withdrew its troops from the Gaza Strip. The withdrawal was part of a plan to disengage from the Palestinians and to create a Palestinian state. However, the withdrawal did not lead to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

2006: The Hamas Takeover of Gaza

In 2006, the Hamas terrorist group won a majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council elections. Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in a violent coup and has ruled the territory ever since.

2014: The Gaza War

In 2014, Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket attacks by Hamas. The war lasted for several weeks and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis.

2018: The Great March of Return

In 2018, Palestinians began holding weekly protests along the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel. The protests, which were known as the Great March of Return, were aimed at drawing attention to the plight of the Palestinian people and to demand an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The protests were met with violence by Israeli troops, and hundreds of Palestinians were killed or injured.

2021: The May Clashes

In 2021, tensions between Israelis and Palestinians escalated again. The clashes were sparked by a number of factors, including the Israeli government's plan to evict Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem. The clashes spread to the Gaza Strip, and Israel launched a military operation against Hamas. The fighting lasted for several days and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians and Israelis.
